On the red carpet: Carina Lau – 2014 Asian Film Awards

A red floor-length evening gown primarily made of lace – topped with a giant rose adornment covering nearly the entire front side of the torso – would be difficult for most women to pull off.  But if one actress is going to do so just that with brimming confidence, there really is no better choice than Carina Lau Kar-Ling (劉嘉玲).

Lau arrived in Macau wearing the Ralph & Russo Couture Spring 2014 creation to present the Best Actress Award alongside Chinese actor Zhang Guoli (張國立) at the 2014 Asian Film Awards (AFA).  Conspicuously without her husband and Best Actor nominee for “The Grandmaster,” Tony Leung Chiu-Wai (梁朝偉), Lau’s two degrees of separation from Wong Kar-Wai’s martial arts epic nonetheless made the result a foregone conclusion, with the AFA’s decision to have the actress present a category that included her husband’s main co-star.  The winner, Zhang Ziyi, said in her acceptance speech to laughter from the audience – and applause from Lau – that Leung was “the best actor in my heart forever.”  (Leung lost the Best Actor Award to Indian actor Irrfan Khan of “The Lunchbox.”)
