Marimekko Spring 2013: Fun surprises among predictable prints

Finnish print making label Marimekko may have been around for six decades, but it waited until 2012 to hit the New York runway.  The 44 looks in the show were as expected: lots of bright, eye-popping colors in the patterns that the company is known for, with color blocking, polka dots and other shapes.  What made the show so fun was that the models – some walking barefoot – were clearly directed to smile throughout, and they included some veterans in Carol Alt, Pat Cleveland and 81-year-old Carmen Dell’Orefice.  Of particular note were the playful bulky wood and metal jewelry, as well as Converse shoes in collaboration with Marimekko.
