Ports 1961 Spring 2011 – New York Fashion Week

The New York Spring 2011 collections at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week marked designer Fiona Cibani’s debut for Ports 1961, a label previously driven by the creative talents of Fiona’s sister Tia.  Inspired by 19th-century Northern Africa and its associated imagery – deserts, sand dunes, oases – the older Cibani came up with a women’s collection that fit this theme well.  However, while her usage of lightweight fabrics, neutral colors and jewelry littered with natural gemstones resulted in much consistency, there was little dazzle and creativity.  Although Ports 1961 tends to veer toward conservative styling, it would have been nice to have seen some more risks being taken with the designs, particularly with a number of dresses that relied too much on the figure to shape large swaths of draping fabric.
