WNBA 2014: Phoenix Mercury 81, Washington Mystics 66

June 10, 2014, Verizon Center, Washington, D.C. – The Washington Mystics (4-5) lost their third straight game, appearing at times completely over-matched by the Phoenix Mercury (6-2). While they managed to play a respectable first half and actually tied the game, once again they were unable to sustain their effort in the second.

In the first five minutes of the third quarter, the Mystics missed all four jump shot attempts and committed three turnovers due to bad passes, while the Mercury scored 10 unanswered points. In this quarter alone, the Mercury’s 6’8″ Brittney Griner was unstoppable with her quickness and length, making four layups and scoring 10 points. (A sequence of one of her drives for a layup follows in the photos below.)

Four of the Mercury starters scored double figures with Griner leading with 20 points. Diana Taurasi had 13 points and 10 assists.
