Acra Review – New York Fashion Week Spring 2009
By Inga Vascenkova
Reem Acra, a Lebanese-born eveningwear designer,
showed her rainbow-colored Spring 2009 collection at New York Fashion
Week and hit a red carpet jackpot soon after with at least five dresses
worn by celebrities at the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards.
Compared to her dark Fall 2008 collection and a moderately colorful Spring
2008 presentation, Acra really outdid herself for Spring 2009. From flamingo
pink, cobalt, and sea green to raspberry, jungle and tangerine, all of
the bright colors were eye-popping, with no solid black color in sight.
In fact, the only hint of black materialized in a form of a black
and white stripe double breasted pant suit, which seemed just too
out of place in this vibrant collection.
Inspired by fantasies of treasure-hunting at an attic of a royal palace,
Acra used luxurious taffeta, organza, silks, chiffon and lame tulle for
her dramatic gowns, dresses, skirts and caftans. Even more volume and
texture was added to already full cocoon-shaped and relaxed designs with
embroidered sleeves, necklines, and other embellishments; my favorite
was the toned down watercolor floral cocoon dress.
Thankfully, accessorizing was left to a minimum, featuring only distinctive
thin belts in various colors.
Reem Acra's New York flagship boutique is located at 14 East 60th
Street and offers eveningwear, bridal gowns, and accessories.
