FILM
June 22-July 15, 2007:
2007 New York Asian Film Festival
reviews by Christopher Bourne

"City of Violence": If Ryu Seung-wan’s previous film “Crying Fist” was his orchestral piece, then “City of Violence’ is his garage band record: fast, loud, and somewhat ragged, but containing very entertaining and catchy riffs.

"Dog Bite Dog": Starring Edison Chen and Sam Lee, “Dog Bite Dog” paints a hellish, Hobbesian world where violence, brutality, and selfishness comprise the coin of the realm.

"Getting Home": Mainland Chinese comedian Zhao Benshan’s beautiful comic performance grounds the film as he – and we – travel through the Chinese countryside, encountering all manner of humanity and witnessing the changes to the landscape.

"I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK": While the film is not quite at the level of Park Chan-wook's previous films, it beautifully reflects the unhinged nature of the inhabitants of the mental asylum where practically the entire film is set.

"The Show Must Go On": Han Jae-rim’s new film is a wry and ultimately poignant take on the gangster-film genre.

Reviews:

"West 32nd": Director Michael Kang delivers an unflinching narrative that draws from Korean gangster films and is rife with tension from start to finish.
