Chris Han - Fall 2007 New York Fashion Week Review
by Yuan-Kwan ChanWith catwalk queens seemingly becoming skinnier by the season, and clothes wearing the models instead of the other way around – provided that they don’t slip off bony figures – it is refreshing to see a collection that frames and flatters.
Enter Korean designer Chris Han, who moved to New York 15 years ago to study at the Parsons School of Design. After a stint in Italy, she came back to the city and eventually started her own business. Han’s New York Fashion Week debut featured her third collection, a set of 28 looks that included interesting uses of tulle, and sparkling gold and black fabric, concluding with one of her best pieces, a floor-length evening gown adorned with long copper necklaces. Not surprisingly, that one dress was a major feat in construction, according to Han.
“It took forever. It was all about the handwork,” Han said backstage after the show. “Even though it is mesh, it’s not machine-sewn – it’s all by hand. So it took more than one or two weeks [to make].”
