Endgame

drink dnL!Things change over time. Although that is quite obvious in some ways (people get older, seasons change, new buildings appear…) it also inevitably still surprises us. A 20th century author, C.S. Lewis, had this to say about the passage of time:

"For we are so little reconciled to time that we are even astonished at it, 'How he's grown!' we exclaim, 'How time flies!' as though the universal form of our experience were again and again a novelty. It is as strange as if a fish were repeatedly surprised at the wetness of water. And that would be strange indeed; unless of course the fish were destined to become, one day, a land animal."

As you now find yourself reading Meniscus online, perhaps it is indeed a sign of the times. For those faithful readers out there who have been with us since the very humble beginnings, you know (hopefully) that time can bring about changes which are good.

Drib Gib, like an aging sports hero past his prime, has well since retired. And we are now online offering back issues via the Internet. Our hope at Meniscus is to continue improving as a ‘zine, and any ways you know in which we can do this, please feel free to let us know.

We stand at a burgeoning moment in time, pregnant with possibilities. Technology continues to improve in ridiculous proportions. I know full well that when this is an ancient back issue, this paragraph will seem quite funny for its antiquated references. But nonetheless . . .cell phones have proliferated to the point where it now seems strange when one of my contemporaries does not have one (I am one of the few holdouts, by the way). DVD players zoomed in and replaced VCRs quite rapidly. And in lesser-known technology, instead of just shooting people we now have the capability to just zap our enemies, sort of like long distance microwaving.

an old Coca-Cola storeMeanwhile, we are also in the golden age of soda. When Coke came around a 100 years ago or so, it slowly grew and became all the rage. But new products and line extensions the past two years have gone far beyond that by producing such drinks as Vanilla Coke, Pepsi Blue, Code Red Mountain Dew, Mello Yello Melon, Red Fusion Dr. Pepper, and most recently dnL, or upside down and backwards 7-up (get it?).

So as you can see, there are many types of changes. Let’s hope for more of the good ones and less of the bad ones. Here’s to more exciting flavors of soft drinks and to not forgetting people are people and quality time can still exist in the midst of a society that does everything to save a minute. Thanks for reading, see you next time.
