Gut's Dynamite Cabarets – Japan Fashion Week Fall 2010 Review By the time the fourth and final day of Japan Fashion Week in Tokyo had arrived, the proceedings at the Tokyo Midtown complex – home to many of the shows at that point – had felt rather clinical. In stark contrast to the youthful cosplay atmosphere of Harajuku and the organized chaos of department-store ridden Shibuya, the government-run shows had such an order to them that there was seemingly no crossover to the fashionable spontaneity of Japan’s capital just outside its walls. So it was a refreshing change to see Gut’s Dynamite Cabarets inject some life into its 10:30 a.m. show on Mar. 26, 2010. Prior to the show, a man dressed in a giant pink bunny costume strolled the runway, posing for pictures with spectators and inviting a few to dance (only one took him up on the offer). Turns out the perpetrator was one-half of the label’s design team of Cabaret Aki and Jackal Kuzu. Then the music began, courtesy of a live electric guitarist, to which models sashayed, exchanged high-fives and, in one case, held a digital video camera during his catwalk to record the proceedings. Finally, of course, there were the clothes, constructed in as cheeky a fashion as the label’s own name. Details such as torn hems on tops, large silver sequined circles (mind you, on a men’s jacket), and long unrestrained threads hanging out of embroidered patterns added playful touches to accompanying pieces such as ruched black capris, teetering platform shoes and army fatigue motifs. While this Fall/Winter 2010 men’s and women’s collection isn’t intended to provide red carpet fare, it IS for those who want to wind up the establishment and have a lot of fun in the process. Gut’s Dynamite Cabarets is sold across Japan as well as through Parco City’s online shop. Video: Runway show highlights Photos: Selected looks from the show
