Duration: 13 minutes

Review:

A virtual reality experience produced by BBC and Passion Animation Studios, Doctor Who: The Runaway, has the thrills of an entire episode packed into 13 minutes. The interactive adventure revolves around the viewer, which adds an entirely new level of adrenaline. The viewer literally becomes a companion of the thirteenth Doctor played by an animated Jodie Whittaker.

Once the VR is on, I find myself inside the TARDIS with the Doctor giving me an exam. She informs me that I have been in a collision and although I seem fine, I cannot move – at least for now. She introduces me to the creature who caused the collision, a ball of pulsating energy called Volta. The Doctor has “stabilized” him so the runaway teenager can eventually be delivered to his home planet, the only place both he and the Universe are safe. If anything goes wrong, Volta will explode creating a black hole, adding both caution and urgency to the mission.

But this is not our only problem. We are being chased and Volta’s anxiety level pushes him closer to exploding as the machine that stabilizes his malfunctions. With a sonic screwdriver in my hand, I get to fly the TARDIS through space debris, distract Volta from his breakdown, and do whatever the Doctor tells me in order to complete the mission and keep everybody aboard safe.

Doctor Who: The Runaway is an animated VR adventure geared towards kids but exciting enough for an adult to embark on, especially if you have always secretly wanted to be Doctor Who’s sidekick.

“Doctor Who: The Runaway” is now available in the United Kingdom and will be available to international fans at a later date.

The Tribeca Immersive program at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival included the Virtual Arcade lineup, which featured 22 world premiere virtual and augmented exhibits, and five in-competition Storyscapes.
