Kiok Fall 2016 – Seoul Fashion Week 서울 패션 위크

A fierce opening dance routine somewhat belied the reality of the Kiok Fall 2016 collection, a mashup of the label’s signature denim accompanied by fishnet stockings, hearts, stripes, furry earrings and fuzzy bustiers.  If all of this sounds tacky or twee, it’s actually not: the team of Kiok Kang, creative director Crayon Kiok and Coco.J Lee have assembled a playful take on women’s prep and streetwear, dragging out conventional sizes and shapes.

The potentially kitsch elements remain subtle, blending into their respective environments.  Although the denim and plaid combinations will not appeal to some, the mixture of carefully chosen swaths of fabric juxtaposed with torn mixed materials add a visual interest.  Less successful pieces, such as the oversized sweaters – and a light brown long-sleeved checked dress with ruffles at the neck, shoulders and hem awkwardly past the calves – lacked structure.
