alice auaa Spring 2014: Goth with all the fixings

The dramatic 21-outfit alice auaa Spring 2014 runway show proved to be a more than fitting conclusion to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo.  The “Sleeps in Water” collection is the latest – and 38th – offering by Yasutaka Funakoshi, whose loyal fans turned up and decked out in his unique fashions in droves.  An excruciatingly detailed collection of men’s and women’s wear will not disappoint those who appreciate Funakoshi’s signature gothic style for the Harajuku fashion set.

Ghostly forest spirits in white – with matching long-haired wigs – strode down the runway in stiletto boots with clear buckled straps wrapped around calves all the way up to the knees.  One model wore a giant silver wire contraption that looped around her waist (this, a follow-up to her colleague who had to balance a giant eyeless fish head with both hands that seemed to swallow up her skull).  A deconstruction of the ruffles, elastic and elaborate embroideries, however, reveals a few pieces that will appeal even to those who do not make the shopping street of Takeshita Dori their stomping grounds – a delicate white bubble skirt being just one example.  Funakoshi’s Spring 2014 collection may all equate to dark matter, but it’s dark matter that his devoted followers will find fun to play dress-up in.
