Backstage: Academy of Art University Fall 2013 – NY Fashion Week

(Ed. note, Nov. 18, 2022: Sixty-five (65) previously unpublished photos were added to the galleries below.)

What is possibly more chaotic than the scrum to get into a fashion show?  Perhaps the scene backstage before the models, clothes and designers hit the runway – particularly in tents shielding everyone and everything from snowstorms.

Space poses a particular challenge for New York Fashion Week shows that feature more than one designer, and it is a reality that the San Francisco-based Academy of Art University (AAU) has now dealt with every season for eight years running.  Ten designers combined for seven Fall 2013 capsule collections and a total of 51 looks, ranging from ’80s New Wave punk-inspired beaded numbers to soft cashmere pants and dresses in grey with crystals (those created by Qian Xie, who delivered the strongest designs of the evening in the show finale).

AAU’s student designers for Fall 2013 were: Janine M. Villa, Amanda Nervig, Yuming Weng, Teresa Field, James Thai, Leah Aripotch, Heather Marie Scholl, Chenxi Li, Heather McDonald and Xie.
